Chromatic Alginate Moulding Material

Made from 99% naturally derived ingredients including seaweed extracts. It was originally designed for mouth mouldings in dentistry, it has been re-engineered to make the perfect external body casting material, capturing every wrinkle and print of the skin. It can also be used for creating single use moulds of sculptures or other objects.

This alginate is chromatic meaning it changes colour as you work with it telling you which stage of the process you are at.

IMPORTANT NOTE

As a finished mould made from alginate will contain water it may adversely effect casting resins due to their sensitivity to water. We recommend using a fast curing resin to minimise the exposure time and if possible coat the alginate mould surface with Vaseline/petroleum jelly to create a water proof barrier. Silicone and plaster are not effected by the water so can be used as casting materials without issue.

TIP

As the water evaporates out of the mould it will shrink and distort so it's recommend for best results to cast with one hour. The mould can be wrapped in cling film and put in the fridge to extend it's life. Remember cold temperatures will prolong the cure of resins though so bare in mind it will increase the chances of adverse results.

The powder is mixed with water to create a liquid moulding material. 450g of alginate once mixed with water will create 1.35 litres of moulding material. The amount of water can be reduced to create a paste rather than a liquid for directly applying to the body or object being moulded.

Sets in 3 minutes:  Mixing time of 2 minutes and a further 1 minute to set

450g of Alginate once mixed will provide 1.35 Litres of moulding material

How much alginate?

450g of alginate will make several newborn hand/foot casts (use 100g for each) or it will make a childs hand cast; 900g is needed for one adult hand/foot or a couple holding hands; 1800g is needed for a 4 person hand cast.  To be certain of quantity, find the container you want to use - it should just a little bigger than the hand/foot you are putting in it so it does not touch the sides, but not too large; measure how many ml of water will fill the container to the height you want it to be, then divide that number of ml by 3 to get the number of grams of alginate you need.
